The Fourth Child

When you have three adorable, funny, mischievous, active kids to blog about, it is easy to forget that there is one more “family member.” But, the reality is that Baker is definitely part of the family. He is exactly what a Golden Retriever is supposed to be….a shadow! Early on, it was clear that he was “Bryce’s dog,” and it has only gotten more apparent as he gets older. My favorite Baker stories usually center around his unhealthy adoration for his “person” and the stress that ensues when he cannot be with him. A few times a year, Bryce goes on a dude weekend, or hunting trip that doesn’t include 4-legged friends. Baker has learned the signs…he knows what it means when Bryce is sorting his hunting and fishing stuff in the garage, I’m pretty sure he equates camo with loneliness! The funny part happens as night falls and Bryce isn’t home yet. Baker gets very distressed. He runs to the front window whenever he hears a car drive toward our house. He barks at every noise. He sleeps on the landing of the stairs or by the door. He paces and mopes. The whole scene is downright pathetic! It has only gotten worse since Bryce moved his lab to the new location and the landlord (who happens to be my dad) allows him to bring Baker to work. They now spend the majority of every day together. It is ridiculous and adorable all at the same time!

I took this picture the other day. Bryce had sat by the front door putting on his running shoes, but didn’t have the dog leash in hand…a bad sign for Baker! He tried, unsuccessfully, to sneak out the door with Bryce. So he spent the next hour, while Bryce was gone running, sitting/laying in front of the window next to the front door waiting and looking for his “person.”

  • Love it! He is such a doll!! Makes me miss you know who :)

  • What a wonderful picture, he’s just beautiful.

  • Ok, first, I thought the title of your post was an announcement. :) Also, I didn’t know you were a UL demonstrator! How cool! I just learned about it this year and totally love it. If anyone I know up there who wants to host, I’ll send them your way. Have you been able to make some good $$$? I’ve entertained the idea of demonstrating myself. BTW, cute, cute dog!

  • he’s a gorgeous boy but then you know that I am prejudiced about GR! I have moved my work time home and enjoy having the dogs “helping” me too! Can’t get through on e-mail. Sent Isaac a birthday wish but it was returned as spam so…… seems like deepest darkest africa will stay that way!
